You keep having
the same fight.
Here's why — and
how to stop.

It's not about the money, the kids, or who forgot to take out the trash. It's about something much deeper — and there's a clinical framework for finally breaking the cycle.

Most couples don't lose their marriages in the dramatic moments.

They lose them in the quiet ones — the argument that went too far on a Tuesday night. The words said in flooding that took weeks to repair. The slow accumulation of distance that neither person can pinpoint the start of.

The damage doesn't announce itself. It builds.

You can be a good person, a loving partner, someone who genuinely wants things to be different — and still find yourself having the same argument for the tenth year in a row. Not because you're failing. Because nobody gave you the framework to interrupt it.

When couples use this framework

Couples who use this framework stop reacting and start responding. They call a pause before the argument causes damage — not after. They come back to each other instead of retreating into separate silences. The fight still happens sometimes. But it stops becoming a wound.

The 5 Steps of the PAUSE Method

Each step is drawn directly from clinical practice — the same framework used in the therapy room.

P

Pause the Pattern

Recognize the moment before escalation and interrupt the automatic cycle — before words are said that can't be unsaid.

A

Acknowledge Your State

Name what's happening in your body and mind. You can't regulate what you haven't recognized.

U

Understand the Trigger

Identify what was actually activated — the wound beneath the reaction, not just the surface complaint.

S

Shift Your Lens

Move from "my story" to "our story." Your partner's behavior makes sense from somewhere — find that place.

E

Engage with Intention

Re-enter the conversation from a regulated, connected place. Respond — don't react.

I've spent over a decade in private practice working with couples in some of the hardest seasons of their marriages — from recurring conflict cycles to intimacy breakdown to the aftermath of betrayal. The PAUSE Method came directly out of that work. It's not a theory. It's what actually helps people stop hurting each other long enough to hear each other. I share it here because the couples who need it most often can't access a therapist right now. This is my way of reaching them anyway.
